Making A Difference in Star City
November 28, 2024

When the opportunity presents itself, as a co-operative, Prairie North steps up.

With the move into the new food store in Melfort there were a number of items that weren't in the plan due to equipment upgrades and design. Anything that wasn't being moved to the new location was inventoried with the intent of it being sold in an auction. Carol Freiks, who lives in Star City, sits on Town Council, and works in the Melfort food store deli brought up the auction at a council meeting as the Star City Community Arena kitchen was in need of extensive upgrades. After reviewing the list of items up for sale, Town Council wrote a letter to Prairie North Co-op expressing interest in a number of things "and the next thing you know we were notified that the items would be donated," explains Crystal Smith, Town of Star City Administrative Assistant.

Pictured in front of the recently installed stainless steel sinks, countertops, and cabinetry are members of Town Council with Terry Tremblay, Prairie North Co-op General Manager. "We were happy to be in a position to make a difference in the community of Star City through this donation and I am especially happy that it was one of our employees that got the ball rolling. The kitchen in this arena is beautiful and something that the community will enjoy for years to come," says Tremblay.
