Successful Sustainable Communities Fund Applicants Announced
October 19, 2021

Melfort, SK (for immediate release) – In August, Prairie North Co-op established the Sustainable Communities Fund, an allocation of grant money available to non-profit organizations to support community development. “The purpose of the Sustainable Communities Fund is to provide support to capital projects and new programs that will enhance the quality of life for the people in the communities and surrounding region that make up the Prairie North Co-op trading area – Archerwill, Kelvington, Melfort, Naicam, Spalding, and St. Brieux,” explains Terry Tremblay, General Manager of Prairie North Co-op.

Between September 1st, when applications opened, and September 30th, when they closed over 20 applications were received. Tremblay goes on to say, “we received some very strong applications which made it tough for the selection committee to choose those projects that would be funded this year. Today, I am proud to announce that our Board has approved the following projects:

Chateau Providence Auxilliary, St. Brieux. Project: new gazebo with a roof
Naicam Snowblasters Inc., Naicam. Project: replacing a warmup shelter
Kelvington School of Dance, Kelvington and area. Project: basement upgrade (installation lockers and storage)
Kelvington Agriculture Society, Kelvington. Project: upgrade stage in beer gardens

We are in the process of reaching out to the other applicants to see if there is anything that we can do to support their fundraising goals.”

Each year a set amount of funding will be allocated to the Sustainable Communities Fund based on gross sales. In 2021, the allocation was $25,000 to support the development of the communities listed above, through either:
1. Capital projects - build, expand, and/or improve facilities; or
2. New programs - develop and implement new programs that support the people in our communities
