Truth and Reconciliation Day

In July 2021, the Federal Government announced the creation of a new federal statutory (STAT) holiday on September 30th, known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The creation of this new STAT addresses one of the 94 Calls to Action from the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Prairie North Co-op will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by recognizing it as a STAT holiday across our organization. Our Admin office will be closed on September 30th and our stores will be operating STAT hours, based on each individual location (see list below).

It is Prairie North Co-op’s intent in observing this day is to create space where each of us can remember, to pause and to engage in meaningful acts of reconciliation and healing. We encourage all team members and leaders across Prairie North Co-op to take actions that will help move them forward as individuals in their journey of reconciliation. To that end, here are some actions to consider:

• Listen to stories and experiences of Residential School survivors (YouTube)
• Watch documentaries such as We Were Children, The Secret Path, and Indian Horse
• Attend a speaker event reflecting on Truth and Reconciliation:

• Wear an orange shirt on September 30 and learn about Phyllis Webstad’s story
• Share your personal commitment and journey to truth and reconciliation with your family and peers

The recognition for this day gives us all an opportunity to understand, grow and build bridges. We are encouraging our team members and community to wear orange to raise awareness and to honour the thousands of survivors.
